Are You Ready For Field Day?

I don’t know about you but I am ready for Field Day this year. I’ve been working on my set up for portable HF operations for the last couple of months. It is nothing elaborate or even remotely fancy. It does work and that is good enough for me.

List of items I will be using at Field Day 2016

• Icom IC-730 HF Transceiver

• MFJ Versa Tuner II

• Homebrew – 80m dipole, 40m dipole, 20m dipole

• 1:1 Balun

• 2 x 100 amp hour AGM batteries

• Morningstar 25 amp solar charge controller

• 145 watts of solar panels

• 12 foot collapsible painters pole

• 100 foot of paracord

• 12 tent stakes

  1. Hi,
I can not believe how many people get into Field day in the USA. I looked at one state alone and there were at least 100 sites. Here in Australia, its hard to create enough interest in our club to get people off their backsides and do something. When we do something its only about 6 people and the same old crew.

Have a great Field Day. It asks for a web site below but I don’t have a ham web site but I do have my little eBook site so i put that down?

    cheers from Australia

    Colin

    1. Hi Colin! It does amaze me how many people do get involed in Field Day. We had about 5 people and thier family members show up. It was KB0SQW and I that worked through the night getting about 125 contacts off of emegency power. Had fun doing it and would do it again!

  2. Looks like a real nice setup. Field Day is over by now — but I hope you exceeded your expectations. I just worked from home using a not very high dipole and my Ten Tec Argonaut V at 15-watts on 40 & 20 meter cw. Enjoyed it and got a few contacts even tho’ they were a bunch of speed demons. HI. Thanks for sharing .. 73 .. Randy — K4LJA

    1. Thanks Randy! This setup did me well. It still amazes me that a dipole still can get out at 12 feet high as far as it does. Of course little higher up would be better though.

  3. Just wanted to compliment you on your battery box/Sun Saver Duo solar set up. I run off grid exclusively and built all my own systems. Your project is one of the nicest I’ve seen in a long time. Most guys just have some thrown together junk. Very well done! Great job!
