September VHF Contest 2018

I got a late start on this years VHF Contest. As a matter of fact I did not start setting up till late Sunday morning. That is almost a whole 20+ hours after the contest had started. My wife and I went to Schell Osage Conservation Area near Schell City, Missouri. It has some camping areas and a fishing lake. This is also the place where we did the January VHF Contest in 2018. VHF Contest September 2017

I didn’t prepare much for Septembers VHF contest.  I threw together a 6m dipole and I already had a 3el 2m beam that I hadn’t used much yet!  So that was my total preparation. My wife had some family property that was only a few minutes away from our QTH that was at a higher elevation than we were at home. So that is where we found ourselves with the Jeep and the rooftop camper. I only Read More …

Activating Locations

From time to time, I like to reflect on where I’ve been with my Ham radios. Here are some pictures from 2016 until now of some of my activations. None of them are NPOTA (National Parks On The Air) and none of them are SOTA (Summits On The Air). We stopped for the night in a very historic town of Clear Lake, Iowa. In addition, Clear Lake, Iowa is also the town where Buddy Holly, The “Big Bopper” and Richie Valens played their last gig before their fateful Read More …

When All Else Fails…HAM!

When all else fails use Ham Radio right? This is the way I’ve been keeping in touch with the fellas back home when on the road. Just throw out a wire and start talking. Only a 12 foot fiberglass painters pole with a 20m homebrew dipole tied off to BBQ pit on one side and tied off to a rock on the other side fed with an ancient ICOM IC-730 doing about 70-80 on a Read More …
